This section provides information and important links to information on the Pure Water San Diego Program.
Program Overview
Pure Water San Diego is an advanced water purification program that will provide nearly half of San Diego’s water supply locally by the end of 2035. Beyond these direct benefits to the region’s local water supply, Pure Water ensures the City of San Diego is in compliance with federal regulations and the Clean Water Act. Once complete, Pure Water will significantly reduce treated discharges from the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant into the Pacific Ocean. For additional information please visit the City of San Diego’s website .
Pure Water San Diego Virtual Tour
Since 2011, the City of San Diego’s 1-million-gallon-per-day Pure Water Demonstration Facility has introduced thousands of visitors to the advanced treatment technologies used to produce high-quality drinking water from recycled wastewater. For those unable to visit in person, the City offers a series of virtual tours featuring members of the Pure Water team—including operators, engineers, and water resource specialists—who explain the purification process and demonstrate how recycled water is treated to meet or exceed all state and federal drinking water standards before becoming part of San Diego’s local water supply. Virtual tours can be found at: https://www.sandiego.gov/public-utilities/sustainability/pure-water-sd/virtual-tour
Phase 1
Phase 1 of the Pure Water Program includes 12 different projects that will clean recycled water to produce 30 million gallons per day of high-quality purified water, reducing the City’s dependence on imported water. For additional information please visit https://www.sandiego.gov/public-utilities/sustainability/pure-water-sd/phase-1-projects
Phase 2
Phase 2 of the City of San Diego’s Pure Water Program is currently in the planning stages. As planning progresses, the Program will continue to influence regional wastewater operations, cost allocation, and long-term planning for the Participating Agencies while creating up to an additional 53 MGD of purified water.
